When the last day of the weekend Islamic school arrives, many families breathe a sigh of relief. But while classes may pause, tarbiyah—the nurturing of our children’s hearts and faith—never takes a vacation.

The busy schedules slow down, weekends become more flexible, and children look forward to summer adventures. Yet tarbiyah doesn’t clock out just because the school year has ended.

The beautiful thing about tarbiyah is that it doesn’t require a classroom. In fact, some of the most meaningful lessons happen around the dinner table, during a family walk, or on the drive home after an afternoon at the park.

This summer, consider making tarbiyah part of your daily rhythm by setting aside just ten or fifteen minutes each day for family worship. Pray one salah together if your schedules allow. Read a few verses from the Qur’an and talk about what they mean. Share one blessing from the day and thank Allah for it before bedtime.

Children often remember these simple moments more than elaborate lessons.

One family shared that every Friday evening during the summer, they gathered for ice cream after Maghrib and each family member told one story about a Prophet, a Companion, or a lesson they had learned that week. Years later, the children remembered those conversations more vividly than any worksheet they had completed.

Our children are always learning. The question is, who—or what—is shaping those lessons?

Summer gives us the opportunity to slow down and intentionally model what it means to love Allah, remember Him often, and make our homes places where faith is lived, not just taught.

Simple Ways to Practice Tarbiyah This Summer

Weekend Islamic school lays an important foundation, but everyday tarbiyah is what families build upon it every single day.

This summer, choose one small family ibadah that everyone can enjoy together. It doesn’t have to be perfect—it just has to be consistent. Those small moments, by Allah’s permission, become lifelong memories and lasting faith.
